Drive about 20 minutes to the east of Arles and the plain slowly gives way to a range of spectacular white limestone hills – les Alpilles. Here you’ll be charmed by a magical landscape of vineyards and olive groves punctuated with quaint provençal villages seemingly unchanged since they were immortalised by the bold brush strokes of Van Gogh.

While Alpilles property was once just home to indigenous vignerons and farmers this authentic rural idlyll has now become a favourite for celebrities, film stars and doyens of the French media who enjoy the excellent restaurants and year-round activity. While at the discrete end of the celebrity spectrum compared to those who favour the Côte d’Azur this well-heeled influx has caused property prices to soar exponentially.

Alpilles property is at its most chic and sought after in the tiny Golden Triangle of St Remy de Provence, Eygalieres and Maussane les Alpilles. However, there are attractive villages that remain more affordable, particularly between Saint Rémy de Provence and Avignon where the landscape is more dominated by market gardening than vineyards. Saint Rémy de Provence property prices in 2023: from €3580/m² with serious renovation required to €9332/m² for luxury property. In the heart of the Alpilles hills with its circular main boulevard where café terraces are shaded under the ancient plain trees, Saint Rémy de Provence is undoubtedly the chic centre of the area and attracts millions of tourists each year. Prices vary greatly depending on the area and the amount of land. Town houses are popular with those who want a short walk to the shops and cafés but are often hard to come by and the compromise will be lack of outside space. A little out of the centre you will find beautifully renovated old stone farmhouses called ‘mas’ as well as modern villas with pools. Arles and Avignon: 35 mins.

Eygalières property prices in 2023: from €5480/m² to €15,240/m². The perfect example of a Provencal village: pretty limestone buildings, the proverbial plane trees, and beautiful views of the Alpilles as a backdrop. It is very chic and probably the most expensive village in the Alpilles. If you have the budget and are looking for village life in a picturesque setting, this is the perfect spot. Saint Rémy de Provence: 15 mins.

Maussane les Alpilles property prices in 2023: from €2970/m² for property in need of renovation to €7310/m² for luxury properties. The area on the south side of the Alpilles is characterized by olive groves and vineyards and is very popular with second home buyers. The main square in front of the church in Maussane is popular all year round with seating for several of the many cafés and restaurants in the village. The centre is like a picture postcard for Provence, with attractive stone buildings, while within walking distance of the square you can also find modern villas with pools. Saint Rémy de Provence: 15 mins.

Fontvieille property prices in in 2023: from €2260/m² for property in need of restoration to €6110/m². An authentic Provencal village which retains its old traditions, with shops, restaurants and a lovely little cinema. Arles and Saint Rémy de Provence: 20 mins.
