Charente Property For Sale

Map of Poitou-Charentes

Charente property may not enjoy the international recognition of neighbouring Dordogne property but smart buyers know that it is cheaper and shares the same micro-climate!

Moreover with Poitiers, Limoges and La Rochelle airports within an hour’s drive and Paris only 2 hours away by TGV, the département known as ‘The Gateway to the South West’ benefits from great accessibility.

It’s no surprise then that Charente property prices are set to rise.

Property is cheapest in the forests and hills of Charente Limousine in the north east, around the pretty medieval town of Confolens, where you can still snaffle up Charente property to renovate at reasonable prices.

Particularly sought after in the north of the département is Ruffec property – this picturesque ‘ville fleurie’ on the banks of the River Charente even has its own TGV station with trains to Paris and Bordeaux. Close by Nanteuil en Vallée and Verteuil sur Charente are charming villages and further south Mansle is a pretty town also set on the Charente River.

Property prices increase as you move further south and east. Cognac property prices reflect the international renown of its brandy and the tourist draw of what is a very pretty medieval town. Nearby Jarnac property is less expensive despite the fact that it is right on the River Charente and makes for an idyllic location.

Property in Angoulême is the most expensive as this is the departmental capital and there is a strong rental market. Known as the ‘Versailles of Charente’ this ancient Roman city peers down from behind its ramparts and among many other festivals hosts the famous classic car ‘Tour des Remparts’ in September.
